Event Description:
The La Crosse Area Community Leadership program is unlike any other program you will experience and is guaranteed to give you greater insight into the community in which you live, better insight into how others think, how you handle differences, and how other leaders work through those issues. Upon graduation, you become a member of our esteemed Alumni group that is equipped to help build the community's future.

This Leadership Program is best for people new to the community, people who want a better understanding of the greater environment in which they work, people serving on non-profit boards, and those wanting a different approach to leadership development.

What Participants Will Gain
Many graduates find that this program taps something in them that they didn't know existed because they better understand the community they live in and are a better leader and citizen as a result. They contribute to vital areas of the community including public office, business, arts, social services and community civic organizations. They leave with:

Date/Time Information:
Session 1: October 19, 2016
  • Meet the very diverse group in this class from social service providers to private businesses. Hear how the perspectives they bring will cause you to think differently as a leader.
  • Learn key leadership principles from Joe Hill that you will carry through this session to help you process what you hear throughout each session.
  • Be engaged in the volunteer project you will undertake to connect what you hear with the impact you can have on the community.

Session 2: November 16, 2016
Economic Vitality & Collaboration
  • Be engaged in a public visioning process as you provide input on how to improve the Highway 53 corridor in North La Crosse
  • Learn how a city plans for the future
  • Discover what La Crosse County is doing to help grow our economy
  • Hear from a developer how they must match dreams with business reality to turn a profit when looking at economic development
  • Hear from a small startup company the challenges of launching

Session #3 December 21, 2016
Safety & Our Criminal Justice System. Hear:
  • from a first-hand account from a high-profile community individual the impact of mental health on our criminal justice system
  • the Chief of La Crosse Police will tell you about their efforts to keep schools safe
  • as you sit in a courtroom, the type of cases coming before the judge followed by his feedback on impacts to our court system.

Session 4: January 18, 2017
The Environment From River to Bluff: Your Role & Responsibility
  • ​Learn about the balance between the recreational and environmental uses of our natural resources from our state agencies and our recreational organizations
  • Tour the Fish Lab to learn about the national research they do on fish
Session 5: February 15, 2017
Government: Political Culture, Politics and Government in the La Crosse Area
  • Hear from La Crosse Mayor Tim Kabat how he leads in the City of La Crosse
  • La Crosse County Board Chair Tara Johnson shares her challenges as a leader at the county-level
  • Learn how your voice can make a difference in government

Education & Lifelong Learning
  • Hear from the heads of our educational system what is impacting our higher education and our K-12 schools
  • Understand why lifelong learning is so essential and how to chart your path

Session #8 May 17, 2017
Celebrate! Take a backstage tour of the Weber Center in La Crosse and learn the impact of the arts in the Community. Celebrate as a group the graduation of this class with a meal and beverage for you and your spouse.
